May 1, 2017 marked the start of BasicMed, the medical certificate relief that allows GA pilots, exercising private pilot privileges, to fly powered aircraft as pilot in command (PIC) without holding an FAA-issued medical certificate.

What is The BasicMed Examination in Newhall IA?

BasicMed permits certain pilots, flying certain aircraft, to conduct certain operations, without holding a current medical certificate. It is an alternative to the third class medical certificate; however, it is not a replacement of the third class certificate, and it is not a "fourth class" certificate.

What Do I Need to Bring to the Appointment?

Once you determine that you are eligible (see below), all you need to bring is your driver's license and Section 2 of this form completed. We will provide the forms for you at your visit if needed.

Do I Qualify for BasicMed?

Here are the items that you'll need to qualify for BasicMed:

1. Driver's License. You must hold a current and valid U.S. driver's license and have it in your personal possession when operating under BasicMed.
2. At least one Medical Certificate. You must have held a valid FAA medical certificate at any point after July 14, 2006.
3. One Special Issuance. BasicMed contains several provisions that require specific actions for individuals who have ever had certain mental, cardiac, or neurological health conditions. If you have had one of those conditions, you must obtain a medical certificate with authorization for special issuance.

Once you've determined your eligibility, here are the steps you'll need to take to fly under BasicMed:

Step 1: Get the Form. Review if you're eligible for BasicMed and download the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (BasicMed). Complete the self-assessment portion of the form.

Step 2: Make an Appointment. Take your FAA Medical Exam Checklist (from Step 1) and get a BasicMed specific exam. Have your doctor fill out the rest of the checklist.

Step 3: Take Course. Once you have completed your FAA Comprehensive Medical Exam Checklist, take the course, pass the quiz, and earn your BasicMed completion certificate.

Step 4: File Documents. Print out the course completion certificate and keep it with your exam checklist in your logbook. Make sure you have a valid flight review and you are ready to fly!
